When my parents informed me this morning that we would all be working outside today, I promptly took a Claritin. And yet I am still suffering from allergies. Granted, it’s not as bad as normal, but still. I hate allergies.

And on that note, I think I’m allergic to the fabulous wool blanket we have in our living room. Allergic as in it not only makes me sneeze and have watery eyes, but it also gives me a rash on my legs. Seriously. Next thing you know, I won’t be able to do anything without doping myself up with multiple allergy medications! Not. Cool.

Breaking News!

July 13, 2009 at 9:02 am (Uncategorized)

There is an accordion player playing outside my house right now. I’m guessing they’re looking to hitchhike, but there’s a cop right there directing traffic because some repairs are going on on the wires right now, so I’m not sure how successful s/he’s going to be. But the music is nice.

In the Reference Room

June 15, 2009 at 2:48 pm (Uncategorized)

So my favorite spot at the library was stolen today, so I actually had to venture into the reference room to get a nice quiet spot to do some research. And guess what? Every other person in this room is a middle-to-old-aged man in a suit and tie. Except for the one old guy in a polo shirt and jeans. And me.

Is it just me, or wouldn’t you expect some different characters to inhabit the library reference room? Or do I just have unrealistic expectations from college and the BPL?

Timed Out

December 11, 2008 at 8:33 pm (Uncategorized)

Ok, I know I haven’t posted in a long while, and I promise that I will start posting things of some substance as soon as finals are over, but for now, bear with me as I rant for a bit before returning to my studies.

Why do the most mundane sites have your sessions time out after an arbitrary amount of time? Seriously, ARTstor just told me that I timed out “for my safety”*. What in the world would I have to protect on ARTstor? They don’t sell anything, so they’re not protecting me from someone stealing my credit card information. I never gave them my address or anything like that – I don’t even think they have my real name – nothing but my email address, so they’re not protecting me from stalkers or people trying to steal my identity. So why sign me out? I’m serious. Does anyone know?

It’s the same with the university’s library website. My searches time out after like 5 minutes. What the heck is that saving me from? Being embarrassed that I’m doing research? All it does is aggravate me.

So, if you can, please illuminate me as to why these harmless sites insist on making my life harder by logging me out every 5 minutes.

*Edit:  It just timed me out again, and for the sake of accuracy, I must point out that it actually says it’s for my “protection”, not safety.  But still.  C’mon.

You Are a Jackie!

You are a Jackie. “I do everything the right way.”

Jackies are realistic, conscientious, and principled. They strive to live up to their high ideals.

How to Get Along with Me

* Take your share of the responsibility so I don’t end up with all the work.

* Acknowledge my achievements.

* I’m hard on myself. Reassure me that I’m fine the way I am.

* Tell me that you value my advice.

* Be fair and considerate, as I am.

* Apologize if you have been unthoughtful. It will help me to forgive.

* Gently encourage me to lighten up and to laugh at myself when I get uptight, but hear my worries first.

What I Like About Being a Jackie

* Being self-disciplined and able to accomplish a great deal

* Working hard to make the world a better place

* Having high standards and ethics; not compromising myself

* Being reasonable, responsible, and dedicated in everything I do

* Being able to put facts together, coming to good understandings, and figuring out wise solutions

* Being the best I can be and bringing out the best in other people

What’s Hard About Being a Jackie

* Being disappointed with myself or others when my expectations are not met

* Feeling burdened by too much responsibility

* Thinking that what I do is never good enough

* Not being appreciated for what I do for people

* Being upset because others aren’t trying as hard as I am

* Obsessing about what I did or what I should do

* Being tense, anxious, and taking things too seriously

Jackies as Children Often

* Criticize themselves in anticipation of criticism from others

* Refrain from doing things that they think might not come out perfect

* Focus on living up to the expectations of their parents and teachers

* Are very responsible; may assume the role of parent

* Hold back negative emotions (“good children aren’t angry”)

Jackies as Parents

* Teach their children responsibility and strong moral values

* Are consistent and fair

* Discipline firmly

Include “crazy-random-happenstance” in daily conversation.

Bonus points if you get this allusion.

You Are a Colon

You are very orderly and fact driven.

You aren’t concerned much with theories or dreams… only what’s true or untrue.

You are brilliant and incredibly learned. Anything you know is well researched.

You like to make lists and sort through things step by step. You aren’t subject to whim or emotions.

Your friends see you as a constant source of knowledge and advice.

(But they are a little sick of you being right all of the time!)

You excel in: Leadership positions

You get along best with: The Semi-Colon

What Punctuation Mark Are You?
PS In other news, I think I added about 15 blogs to my reader today and deleted a few defunct ones, so I am now 11 blogs away from 200 subscriptions!  😀

Sobering Thought

May 12, 2008 at 9:19 pm (Drinking, Friends, Summer, Uncategorized)

I went back to the library where I used to work today both to say hi and to check out the books with my friend G. One of the women I used to work with, E, has a son, Z, who graduated from high school with G and me and is currently attending Daniel Webster College for some sort of aviation/military thing. Z is going to turn 21 soon, and he was going to go out with some buddies from school, including one guy who just got back from his second tour in Iraq. The thing is, Z’s friend is only 20. Can you imagine? Turning 21 and have friends who are younger than you and have already been to Iraq for extended periods of time fighting – twice!? Turning 21 and still not being able to buy your friend who just got back from 2 tours in Iraq a drink? It makes you feel old and young and useless and whatever all at the same time…

Pollen, Pollen Everywhere…

April 13, 2008 at 5:26 pm (Uncategorized)

You know it’s spring when your computer has a film of bright yellow pollen covering it thanks to its proximity to the open windows in your room.  Your laptop, your papers, your books, your printer.  Basically everything.  Lovely.  Plus, have you ever handled a piece of paper covered in pollen?  It feels weird (in a gross way) on your hands.
