Happy Birthday to Me… Later

September 30, 2008 at 11:21 pm (Sleep)

I had a wonderful, fantabulous birthday that I shall tell you all about later as I believe I only got about 6 or so hours of actual sleep last night and thus must to bed early tonight to make up for it especially since I have a Writing Center appointment tomorrow morning which means I can’t sleep in as late as I want/need, for, as you may be able to tell, a lack of sleep does adverse, though potentially interesting, things to my sentence length and copius usage of commas to craft said sentences.  Ok, I’m done now.  To bed!

I Am Officially Awesome

September 30, 2008 at 1:26 am (Happy, Homework, School)

I just completed a translation of a portion of Ovid’s Metamorphoses from the part about Pryamus and Thisbe into a Shakespearean sonnet.  I am officially amazing.  Happy birthday to me 😀

Here it is (from the part where Pyramus kills himself, thinking Thisbe is dead, when she’s not) (and if it doesn’t make sense, don’t worry – it’s not necessarily supposed to, at least to you 😀 ):

Her blood stain’d mantle he bore to the tree
And cried out as he held it fast to him
“Come, now take my blood’s draught too!”  Then did he
From his belt draw his happy dagger grim
And himself imbrued where the heart doth hop.
Thus conquer’d, he fell supine ‘pon the ground
Blood spouting high from the wound, drop by drop,
Like a broke lead pipe, with a hissing sound
Water burst through, staining the curséd fruit
With spilt soul to a darker hue of night
Arising from the depths of the drench’d root
Those hanging fore’er mindful of their plight.
Lo!  Lest betray her love, she returns thus
And sweet eyes and soul seek her Pyramus

PS Can you catch all the Shakespearean allusions?

Dear anonymous male person and female person in the hall outside my room,

5 a.m. is way too early (or late, as it probably was for you) to be waking anyone up.  If you must talk at that hour, kindly take it somewhere where you know for sure no one will be trying to sleep.  It would be much appreciated and your karma might improve.

That is all.

I have found the most fantastic library ever.  I want it.  Or at least something like it.  I want to be a gazillionaire and design my own library along these lines.  Go read that article for all the fabulous pictures and descriptions, but here is a preview:

Three stories.  Hundreds, if not thousands, of artifacts – not to mention books!  Etched-glass railings.  :sigh:

For those of you looking for birthday ideas: this is what I want!

Contests Galore!

September 26, 2008 at 8:17 pm (Blogs, Friends) (, , )

Just in case any of you are looking for a new laptop, there are 15 blogs giving away HP notebooks.  I’m afraid my poor laptop is going to die any day, as it seems to start up slower and slower everyday (I think it was about 10 minutes this morning before I could use it for anything…), so I’m planning on entering all of them (if possible, like they aren’t limited to business majors or something stupid like that).  While I don’t want the competition, I feel it’s only right that I share the opportunity with all you lovely people 😀

So here’s the list of sites, along with the start date of each contest.  All the contests end one week after they open.

Most of these blogs (actually, probably all of them) were chosen because they have thousands of readers (I’m not kidding – check out their feed stats!), so it’s probably a very slim chance that I’ll win, but hey, it’s worth a try.  If you go out for one – good luck!

PS I think this is my good deed for the month 😛

Why I Love a Certain English Professor

September 26, 2008 at 3:03 pm (Happy, Homework, School)

My professor for Victorian Fantasy is amazing.  First, who wouldn’t love someone who teaches a class on Victorian Fantasy?  I mean, seriously!  Second, she’s currently writing a paper on the Twilight series.  Which means she’s currently rereading the whole series.  Which means she doesn’t have time to grade our weekly response papers.  Which brings me to the third reason I love her: since she was unable to finish grading our weekly response papers from this last week, then she doesn’t feel like she can rightfully expect us to do one for the following week.  And she’s not planning on telling the people who weren’t in class today this little tidbit.  She’s letting us tell them if we happen to see them or something.  Happiness!

Oh, and I love her because she’s an excellent teacher and we have some really good class discussions and all that, but the above reasons are why she goes above and beyond my normal adoration for my amazing professors.

Include “crazy-random-happenstance” in daily conversation.

Bonus points if you get this allusion.

Happy Wednesday!

September 25, 2008 at 9:32 am (Happy, School)

Yesterday was quite a happy little day.  First, I found out that my first MWF class of the day is going to be cancelled on Friday, which means that I only have ONE class on Friday, since my last MWF class of the day was cancelled both Wednesday and Friday of this week as the professor is presenting a paper at a conference in Rome.  So this means that the only thing scheduled all day on Friday is one class from 12:30-1:20!!!  Yippee!  The only downside is that next week I’ll have to go back to having 3 classes on MWF.  Sadness.  But I shall enjoy this essentially-long weekend!  Whatever shall I do with myself?

Boiling Blood

September 25, 2008 at 9:28 am (Rants, School)

Recently, there have been a few things that have really annoyed me, and I thought I’d share them with you fine people and get them out of my system!  Fun times had by all!

  • Last week, the Collegian had some frantic posts in the daily school email seeking someone to help with circulation.  It was only one day a week, and I figured it could be fun, so I emailed the girl who was apparently in charge of this, offering to help out.  She emailed me back almost immediately asking when I could meet with her the next day since they were desperate to find someone, so I responded with the times I was free.  Two days later, the day the newspaper goes out, having not heard back from this girl, I email her asking what’s going on and if she wants me to meet her somewhere and help out with distributing the paper around campus.  She responds – the next day – telling me that they had hired someone – the day after I contacted them!  The tone of the email was such that I was apparently expected to know that they had obviously hired someone else, and I was stupid for even asking if I could help out.  Grrrrr
  • The landscaping people at this University apparently have nothing better to do between the hours on 8am and 10am but use extremely loud landscaping devices in the courtyard of my dorm.  I need sleep, people.
  • The girls who live next door to me are big fans of starting the weekend on Thursday.  And occasionally yelling at each other.  At 2am.
  • Girls who use way too much smelly product in the shower while simultaneously using up all the hot water.

Ok, I’m done.  As you may have noticed, this isn’t really the rage-inducing list that you may have expected, and to be honest, the only one that makes me really really mad is the first point, but now that I’ve had this catharsis, it’s all better – right?  Ok, back to our regular happy-go-lucky programming…

In the post office today, I saw a guy with a Grey Court shirt on.  The back of it said, “Strong enough for men, made for women.”  Not sure what the message here is supposed to be.  Ideas?
