Macbeth and Machiavelli

October 8, 2007 at 8:44 pm (Theater)

I am currently getting a first-hand education in Machiavelli’s claim that it is better to be feared than lover.

We are at Macbeth practice, running 2 scenes behind schedule for tonight, and our Banquo had to leave for a class requirement that was only applied 2 weeks ago; thus, it was not on her original conflicts sheet. So the director turns around, discovers she’s not here, questions her absence, and storms out, since apparently “no one wants to do this.”

10 minutes later, after some sweet-talking by the assistant director and stage manager, he’s back. Where we were once joking and enjoying rehearsal, now everyone is totally focused on being on task and making sure the director is happy. The scripts are away, as everyone is attempting to prove they can be off book, everyone is very agreeable to the director’s changes, etc. ‘Tis better to be feared than loved…
